The Federal Reserve reports, "One of the most striking changes in the composition of household retirement savings over the past 20 years has been the shift from defined benefit to defined contribution pension plans."

Defined Benefit Plan
A retirement plan that stipulates that each participant will receive a set payment after a predetermined number of years of service. It does not pay taxes on investments within the plan. Contribution to the plan may be by employer only, employee only or both.

Defined Contribution Plan
An employer-sponsored retirement plan under which contributions are made by the employer, employee or both, to individual member accounts to generate funds for distribution to the member at retirement. Contribution amounts are determined by the employer and are usually a set percentage of the employee's contribution.
